Online gambling in Spain is an opportunity for traditional gambling operators whose revenues have been decreasing in years and for other international operators that wish to enter the Spanish market. Mechanisms to adapt the market to the requirements of the new online environment have resulted in the new Gambling Regulations (Law 13/2011), which are supported by Law 10/2010 on the prevention of money laundering.
Some drivers that will probably determine sector evolution are the creation of a critical mass of gamblers within the applicable jurisdiction in order to build a sustainable and feasible market. Secondly, tax rates on online gambling and general tax rates will have a decisive impact on the activities of online gambling companies, since the opportunity to generate tax revenues from gambling is one of the main reasons for Governments to regulate and licence the online segment. Finally, social networks will also be a major growth factor in the global online gambling market.
